The great recession has had a significant and prolonged effect on unemployment rates in the United States. As a result of the weakened economy, national health spending growth slowed to 4.4% in 2008; the lowest growth rate in over 40 years. The implementation of healthcare reform should result in significant reductions in the number of uninsured over the next several years. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of the economic recession on the current and future demand for ASC services. To complete the study, we addressed three research questions: How has the economy impacted volume of services at ASCs?; Which specialties have been most impacted by economic conditions?; What will be the demand for ASC services over the next 3 to 5 years? To complete the study, we used data from several large ASC companies and KNG Health’s healthcare demand projection model.
