KNG Health estimated practice expenses for select oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures through designing a data collection system and analyzing survey data. We collected financial information through extensive surveying of surgical practices to fill the gap in information concerning the cost of operating maxillofacial practices. We used a two-step process to collect practice expense data. First, KNG Health designed and electronically distributed a survey instrument to randomly selected surgeons. Second, an expert panel of oral and maxillofacial surgeons was convened to collectively determine reasonable procedure-specific inputs and practice expense estimates using the RAND Corporation’s Delphi method. KNG Health used the survey data and information from the American Medical Association’s Relative Value Scale (RVS) Update Committee (RUC) to develop practice expense inputs. The practice expense analysis provided practitioners with an efficiency benchmark by allowing them to see how resources are typically allocated to different production components in a standard practice, and lead the way for improving payment accuracy.
