Translating Intentions into Action: Lessons from Non-participants of the Medicare Bundled Payment for Care Improvement Initiative

KNG Health was awarded a grant from The Commonwealth Fund to study the factors that influence providers’ decisions on whether or not to participate in CMS’s Bundled Payment for Care Improvement (BPCI) Initiative.  Through structured interviews, we engaged two groups of providers: (1) providers who expressed initial interest in the program but eventually chose not to participate in BPCI Model 2 or Model 4; and (2) a comparison group of providers that participated in BPCI Models 2 or 4. We analyzed the qualitative information gathered across these two groups and identified key considerations for policymakers as they seek to broaden participation in bundled payments.  Our findings were published in the American Journal of Accountable Care.
