Impact of Uncompensated Care Cost Burden on Hospital Readmission Rates

To understand the potential impact of Medicare’s Hospital Readmissions Reduction, KNG Health was commissioned to explore the relationship between the level of uncompensated cost burden and hospital readmission rates. The study quantified the relationship through three models, one of which controlled for patient characteristics including race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The analysis showed that race and ethnicity have a significant impact on readmission rates and, in fact was found to explain most of the differences in readmission rates by level of uncompensated care cost.
