In a recent webinar, Dr. Lane Koenig presented findings on utilization of long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) during the COVID-19 public health emergency as part of the National Association of Long Term Hospitals Spring 2021 Webinar Series. In his presentation, Dr. Koenig examined: (1) trends in key measures on LTCHs’ continued adaptation to Medicare payment criteria: and (2) the role of LTCHs during the COVID-19 public health emergency. According to Dr. Koenig, a Medicare beneficiary with COVID-19 was almost 4 times more likely to go to a long term care hospital than a non-COVID-19 patient in June 2020. This differential between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients far exceeded those for other post-acute care providers and demonstrates the significant role LTCHs have played during the public health emergency.
