KNG Health Reform Model
June 26, 2025
The KNG Health Reform Model (KNG-HRM) is a microsimulation model that uses data from the American Community Survey, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, and other data sources to estimate coverage effects of health reform proposals at the national, state, and other geographical levels. KNG Health researchers have used the KNG-HRM to assess the effects of national policies and proposals, such as Medicare for America, and state proposals, such as New Mexico’s Health Security Plan. Applications of the model include:
- An examination of the impact on coverage and healthcare spending from the enhanced premium tax credits and the expected impact of allowing these credits to expire;
- State-specific analyses of the effects of a government-sponsored plan on Marketplace insurance coverage, hospitals, people of color, and rural communities, including studies on proposals for Connecticut and Nevada;
- An analysis of the impact on coverage and Federal spending from proposals to enhance the Affordable Care Act, as included in the American Rescue Plan Act;
- A fiscal analysis of the cost and coverage impacts of New Mexico’s Health Security Plan;
- An analysis of the introduction of a public option on the Marketplaces;
- An analysis of the impact on coverage and Federal spending from proposals to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act; and
- An assessment of a proposal to provide coverage to the uninsured through government-backed loans.
